The Government of India has introduced the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in India across various states and union territories. This initiative aims to provide functional tap water connections to every rural household by 2028 under the Har Ghar Nal Ka Jal Scheme. The mission addresses the issue of lack of piped water supply for nearly half of India’s population. It is implemented by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Nationwide, the central government has allocated ₹3.6 lakh crore for this initiative. It focuses on ensuring a regular and long-term drinking water supply. The target year is 2028, and the goal is to make India Open Defecation Free (ODF). Specifically in rural households, the aim of the mission is to provide safe, quality drinking water to individual household connections. Read further to know more about the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
